E-Learning Begins To Find Its Niche

http://pubs.acs.org/cen/education/84/8403learning.html

I'm glad to see another analytical article on the software I'm using, but have been very discouraged from comments (IRL) about the lack of authenticity of doing virtual labs. There was one line that I want to focus on.
The simulations, when used as a prelab assignment, also tend to help students finish real labs much faster, he added.

I've never thought of this. Call me ignorant, but I'd long been looking for some real way to increase the amount I was able to use the software, and hadn't thought of anything. I was beginning to despair that I was going to have a hard time integrating this software into my curriculum.

One thing I really like about Blogging is the brainstorming that is taking place! It doesn't matter what type of technology we are using. There are similarities and differences across the board! I'm sure there are times when the simulation would be most effective before, after, or in place of a lab experiement - maybe not at all. The idea of doing one prior to is a great one as you stated. The same is true of using the calculator first - sometimes kids need to see the big picture before they can break it down into the pieces. Technology affords us this opportunity.

Matt, I hope we have the opportunity to work together in the future.

I could see where confirming that virtual labs are authentic could be a challenge. I think it is also important to note that virtual labs increase the productivity of classroom labs. As I have stated earlier, I think my lab results on titrations would have been a lot better if I had used a virtual lab to practice.
